In this article, we will show you how to create a new product category.

Product categories in DISH POS help you structure reports and organise your products efficiently. This guide walks you through creating both top-level categories and subcategories using the new Backoffice interface - compatible with both tablet and mobile devices.

10 STEPS

1. We will begin this tutorial with showing you how to create a new product category.
In order to create a new product category, under Home bar please click on ‘Menu Management’.

2. Now simply navigate down the list and select "Product categories" by clicking on it.

3. Once you are in the Product Category section, you will see an option next to the search bar, which says "Create new product category", click on it.

4. Under Create New Product category, you will be asked to Enter the name you want for the new category.

(In this example we will use: "New Category")

5. Once you type the name, you can proceed to click on "Create"
You have now created a new top-level category.

6. In order to create a new subcategory, please select the parent category under which you want to create the subcategory.

7. Once you select the parent category you will need to click on Subcategory next to it.

Note: Products can only be assigned to a category if there are no subcategories within that category.

8. In the selected subcategory, Enter the name of the required subcategory.
(In this example we will use ‘Side dishes’)

9. Now simply Click on Create and you will have your new subcategory.

10. That's it. Congratulations, you completed the tutorial!

Step-by-step instructions

Getting Started

Begin at the Home bar and navigate to Menu Management. This is your central hub for structuring and maintaining your product listings.

From there, scroll through the available options and select Product Categories. This section displays all existing categories and allows you to create new ones.

Creating a New Product Category

Inside the Product Categories section, locate the option labeled “Create new product category” near the search bar. Clicking this opens a simple form.

Enter a name for your category - for example, “New Category”. Once you’ve chosen an appropriate name, click Create. Your new top-level category is now ready to use.

Adding a Subcategory

To refine your structure further, you can create subcategories:

  1. Select the parent category under which you want the subcategory to appear.
  2. Click on Subcategory next to the selected category.
  3. Enter a name for the subcategory, such as “Side dishes”.
  4. Click Create to finalize it.

Your subcategory will now appear nested under the chosen parent.

Important Note:

Products can only be assigned directly to a category if that category does not contain subcategories. If subcategories exist, products must be assigned within them instead.

Why It Matters

Product categories are more than just labels; they help structure reports, improve navigation, and keep your system organized as your menu grows.

With just a few clicks, you can build a clean, scalable category system that keeps everything in its right place.
